Excellent Reasons Why Paralegals Should Obtain Certification

While paralegals do not need to obtain certification, there are many benefits to obtaining this qualification. Following are some of the many terrific benefits of possessing paralegal certification.

1. First of all, certification will make applicants stand out among noncertified applicants. It is a fact that most law firms prefer to hire certified paralegals over those who do not have certification. Thus, they will examine those applications of certified paralegals more closely than the applications of any others.

2. Secondly, paralegal certification shows employers that the person is a highly-trained professional who is serious about his or her profession. Certified paralegals often enjoy much more prestige and respect than those who do not hold certification.

3. Another reason that paralegals should become certified is ethics. Since a portion of the paralegal exam focuses on ethics, this shows employers that these professionals are fully knowledgeable of the legal code of ethics, which is necessary for the career.

4. Finally, certified paralegals have a much greater chance of receiving raises, promotions and higher-paying jobs than do paralegals without certification.

Presently, there are four national organizations that provide these professionals with the certification they seek, and they are as follows.

The National Association of Legal Assistants

The National Federation of Paralegal Associations

The National Association of Legal Secretaries

The American Alliance of Paralegals
